An International Congress organized by the University of Navarra, the Museo del Traje and the Asociaci\u00f3n of Friends of Museo del Traje, with the collaboration of the Museo del Prado, Casa Velazquez and the Sociedad Espa\u00f1ola de Estudios del Siglo XVIII.<\/h3>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tThis Congress aims to be an opportunity for academics, teachers and students from Spain and abroad to meet to expose, discuss and examine how fashion was in Spain during the century of the Enlightenment, as well as the role it played in society, art, economy and industry of this era.\n

\nSome twenty leading specialists from museums, universities and research centers of European and North American prestige will participate with papers on their respective subjects of study. \n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tSeventeen years have passed since the First International Congress on Spanish fashion in the Hapsburg era was held in Madrid: Dressing in Spanish style. <\/a>\n

\nDuring this time, interest in the study of clothing has grown in various disciplines of knowledge in our country. For this reason, the congress entitled Dressing in French or Spanish style. Eighteenth century fashion in Spain<\/strong>, establishes a continuity with the one we held in 2007 and, if that one analyzed the Hapsburg period, our intention is to complete it now with the Bourbon period.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tThe purpose of this congress is to study the diffusion of eighteenth-century Spanish dress customs. The eighteenth century, in terms of its dress and fashions, is of an extraordinary singularity for its continuous debate between national fashions and those coming from abroad. \n

The changes in clothing that took place in the second half of the 18th century reflected the transformation of a society that, with the modern style, as it was called at the time, Rococo, had begun to value comfortable and pleasurable intimacy and with it a new concept of sociability. \n

\nThe new sociability gave rise to the construction of new representative types of modern life and consequently to new appearances that made it feasible to recover in a committed way the debates on the nature of the sexes and the types of masculinity and femininity of eighteenth-century society. \n

\nThe change of mentality brought about by the French Revolution in 1789 and the industrial revolution put an end to the Ancien R\u00e9gime, giving way to the freedom to dress according to personal taste. The democratization of fashion had begun. In 1793 the National Convention proclaimed a decree and a Universal principle of freedom: the freedom to dress freely. The sumptuary laws were abolished.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t
